Chapter Eight

“How did you find this place?”

They’d claimed a cozy spot and stood together watching the multicolored fireworks break in the night sky above. The crowd oohed and aahed at the display. But Kara’s attention remained on the man next to her.

Marcus shifted and she found herself in front of him, spooned to him, his arms around her waist.

“I read about it in the newspaper.”

“And your assistant set it up?”

He swung his head down. “Nadira? Nah. She’s in L.A. I do let my people have some time off.”

Kara chewed on that for a bit. Then they simply enjoyed the rest of the fireworks display.

A red, white and blue pyrotechnic burst overhead. The crowd applauded. But Kara’s mind was on what they’d done in the car.

“That one was nice.”

“Marcus?”

“Umm-hmm?”

She turned in his arms, too late realizing just how close that put them. She stepped back a bit. His arms, though, remained around her. “About what happened in the car…”

“I’m attracted to you, Kara. I’m not going to deny that or pretend that it doesn’t exist. But I’m also not going to take advantage of you.”

“Why not?”

He chuckled. “Well, isn’t this a fine switch in the script.”

She shook her head, clarifying her question. “I mean, why are you being such a gentleman? I’ve been pretty lukewarm toward you.”

He let her go. Ice glinted in his eyes. Kara realized, too late, that she’d taken the wrong approach. That he’d taken offense.

“I am a gentleman, Dr. Kara.” This time she heard no playful affection in the nickname. “You have some sort of preconceived notion about who I am and what I’m supposed to be about. It’s wearing thin, Doctor.”

“Marcus, I didn’t mean…”

“Well, what did you mean?”

Kara carefully chose her words. “All my life I’ve studied people, human nature. I think that’s why I’ve never been a good candidate for a long-term relationship. Most of the men I know are afraid that I spend my time psychoanalyzing them.”

“You do.”

Kara frowned, but didn’t let his rejoinder stem the flow of what she wanted to tell him. “The night we met, you said I was intense and I denied it.”

“Denial is not a river in Egypt,” he mumbled.

Either she didn’t hear him or she chose to ignore the comment. “That was a defense mechanism on my part,” she said. “I’m the trained analyst and I guess I didn’t like it a lot when the tables were turned.”

“And you’re telling me this now, why?”

Well, there was the jackpot question, Kara thought.

“Because I’m confused,” she finally admitted. “Where is this going?”

The crowd began to disperse. He shoved his hands into his pockets and started walking toward the area where they’d parked. Falling into step next to him, Kara continued exploring her psyche. “I’m not like your other women, even though part of me fears I am.”

“My other women?”

Kara looked up at him, surprised at the angry tone. “What did I say?”

“My other women,” he repeated, shaking his head. “For someone who is supposed to be an understanding and open professional counselor, you sure have a closed mind.
